Is Mouthwash Necessary?

Is Mouthwash Necessary?

Your dentist encourages you to brush your teeth at least twice a day, and at every visit asks whether or not you are flossing daily (although one look inside your mouth will usually answer that question). However, does your dentist ever ask you if you use mouthwash? Most likely not, which can leave you questioning whether or not mouthwash is necessary.

The truth is, mouthwash is not considered to be a necessary component of your oral health routine if your mouth is healthy. For people who have healthy teeth and gums, who practice good oral health care habits at home, and who visit the dentist regularly for cleanings and checkups, they are often doing enough to keep their mouths as healthy as possible. However, many people are simply more prone to developing cavities and gum disease through genetics, dietary choices, medications, or less than ideal oral hygiene, and it is these patients who can benefit the most from rinsing with mouthwash on a regular basis.

Mouthwash that carries the American Dental Association's (ADA) seal of acceptance has been evaluated for its ability to help fight cavities and lower the risk for gum disease. Mouthwash with antibacterial ingredients can help reduce cavity-causing bacteria within the mouth. There are millions of bacteria present inside the mouth on any given day, but regular brushing and flossing help to remove them from your teeth and gums. If you are not flossing and brushing enough, rinsing with a mouthwash can help reduce bacteria. This is not to suggest that mouthwash should replace necessary brushing and flossing, but rather that mouthwash can be a helpful component for those who are more prone to oral health issues.

At Green Dentistry, we are here to help all of our patients work toward optimal oral health. We are happy to answer any questions that you may have, and if you would like to know more about the benefits of mouthwash and whether you should add it to your oral health routine, please call today.
